It’s hard to believe that the year has flown by so quickly. Weren’t we just moving everyone in last week??!! As I reflect on what I am thankful for I see the wonderful work of the Fellows. You have excelled as committee members and participants. To know that we have offered 33 events for Fellows to be a part of in one semester is amazing. So many of the events were geared toward helping the local community and recruiting future teachers. Our office is full of Fellows planning, working and sharing a laugh. It’s a wonderful environment and having a terrific staff that includes Amy, Ben, Tyler and Chelsea is something to be truly thankful for. I hope, as you spend a few days away, that you too will reflect on all the good things in your life to be thankful for. Let’s hope the UNCW Teaching Fellows is at the top of your list! KB

UNCW Teaching Fellows Studying Abroad Katie Tyson, a Sophomore Teaching Fellows, is currently in Australia. Here is what she is currently doing in the land down under. Hey mates! (yea they really say that here) hope yall are having a good semester-I know I have! The school here is not as pretty as UNCW and deffinitly not as laid back. I have had heaps of work to do and it is difficult to get good grades! They do not have A's B's etc. they give high distinction(80-100), distinction (70-80), a mark (60-70), and a pass (50-60) but it is nearly impossible to get high distinction. The study program is pretty different to, you only take classes in your major and you don't pick your teachers. You also don't have a choice of the classes you take, for example there are 4 classes you HAVE to take first semester, four your HAVE to take second etc. It has been interesting to see how everything is done but a bit confusing-and way more work than I am used to. The city is HUGE! It is like living in downtown Charlotte. Okay that may not be huge to everyone but it is to me. The houses are all one on top of the other and if people have a yard they are really proud of it-but the biggest yard I have seen has been about the size of my dorm room last year. Most are much smaller. The people are so nice though! I have to ride public transportation to school and stuff since I live about an hour away but I love it because there is always someone to talk to on the bus/train. It is weird because how I imagined Australia-tan people, laid back, always wearing flip flops-DEFINITLEY not what all of Australia is like. I just went on a trip up north into the outback and to some random beaches and saw the part of Australia that we see in moves and stuff, which was really neat but most of Australians do not live like that at all. I FINALLY got to see a kangaroo, after being here for 3 months) but still no koala's. I guess since it is very city like there aren't many wild animals. I havn't dont much traveling because of school but since I am done at the end of October maybe I will see more then! Hope everyone is having a great semester and ask me anything you want about it here! I love talking about it :) Cheers! Katie |
