Frequently Asked Questions about Eligibility

What does Academically Ineligible mean?

If the words "Academically Ineligible" or "Academic Warning", appear on your SeaNet report, see the Registrar's Office web page section on Frequently Asked Questions about Eligibility.

Can I attend a college near my home to restore my academic eligibility?

No. Since only the hours transfer in from other institutions, and not the grades, you cannot improve your GPA by taking courses elsewhere. In fact, taking hours elsewhere may actually worsen the situation because the minimum GPA required to be retained in good standing increases with the total number of hours the student has attempted at all colleges attended.

I failed a course at UNCW. Can I replace the "F" with a course taken at another college?

No. Since grades do not transfer, the "F" would remain in your GPA. However, if a student retakes a course at another college and earns a "C" or better, s/he will receive credit for that course. This is not generally advisable, however, since once a student earns a "C" or better in a course at any institution, s/he may NOT retake the course at UNCW for credit. Therefore, passing the course elsewhere with a "C" creates a situation in which it is impossible for the student to replace his/her original grade of "F" at UNCW, since a student cannot receive credit for the same course twice.

Important Definitions to Remember:

Quality Hours means only hours taken at UNCW that are used to compute the grade point average. This includes courses in which the student received grades of "A" through "F" or "WF". However, if a student withdrew from a course within the withdrawal deadline and received a "W", those hours are NOT used in the grade point average calculation.

Transfer Hours
means hours earned at institutions other than UNCW that have been accepted by the Office of Admissions for credit towards a UNCW degree. A student must have earned a "C" (2.00) or better in order for a course to transfer to UNCW (see Transfer Students).
