Introduction for Incoming Freshman & their Parents

As a high school or transfer student considering different colleges, you’ll weigh your choices carefully. It’s easy to get caught up in numbers, comparing things such as campus size and financial aid awards. These things are very important, but they don’t convey the atmosphere and tradition of each campus.

UNCW is primarily an undergraduate, teaching oriented university. Even as a first semester freshman you’ll be taught by Ph.D. level professors in most or all of your courses. The faculty at UNCW are active scholars in their fields, with many receiving grants and publishing work, but teaching is their first priority during the semester. Accordingly, professors hold regular office hours and encourage students to ask questions.

Parents are understandably concerned about how their child will adjust to college, but they can rest assured that UNCW offers a full range of support services. The Center for Academic Advising is always open to freshmen who have questions or problems in any facet of their life at UNCW. Our academic advisors can listen to students’ concerns, help students solve problems, and direct them to appropriate resources on campus.

Student life at UNCW is diverse and active. Many UNCW students join student groups and volunteer in the community. Enrolled students describe the campus and the people in the UNCW community as friendly and helpful. It is a place where new students quickly feel at home.

We hope that you will take the time to visit our campus, but if you cannot we hope this information has been helpful in describing our campus atmosphere.(Admissions)
