Dear Faculty and Staff,

As a student at UNCW, I thank you for the enthusiasm, dedication and hard work you bring to our campus community. You make this a wonderful place to get an education! As a scholarship recipient, I hope to encourage you to participate in the UNCW Faculty-Staff Campaign. I know from personal experience that financial support from faculty and staff makes a difference for students such as me.

I enrolled at UNCW last fall after completing two years of study at Coastal Carolina Community College. I put myself through school while my husband, then a U.S. Marine, was stationed in Iraq. It wasn't easy to balance coursework with raising our son, now 3, but I learned to manage my time well. My husband was seriously wounded in battle two years ago; he spent 16 days in the hospital and more time in rehabilitation. Although he has fully recovered, his experience changed my life as well as his.

I have always sought to find a way to serve my country by helping others. The nurses who cared for my husband after his injury inspired me to pursue a career in health care. They were so dedicated, and they encouraged me to be actively involved in his care. The shortage of nurses in our nation is shocking; we need determined, dedicated people to become nurses. That’s why I am thrilled to be a pre-licensure student in our School of Nursing.

I wouldn't be able to attend UNCW, though, without the support from many donors, including faculty and staff. Last fall, I received the MSgt. (Ret.) E. S. Moncrief Military Dependents Scholarship, created by campus photographer Jamie Moncrief and his family in memory of his father. Being the recipient of this scholarship showed me that someone else believed in me. The funding it provides is extremely helpful – my nursing books, equipment and uniform costs exceeded $1,200 this semester – but the self-confidence receiving this scholarship gave me is priceless.

I hope you will consider supporting students like me by participating in the UNCW Faculty-Staff Campaign. It’s not about the amount that you give because anything helps. Instead it is about coming together to make a difference. Please give to the program, scholarship or department that is meaningful to you, and Grow UNCW your Way! Your support will help students as they learn, grow and realize their dreams.

Many thanks for your support!
