Alumni Association Challenge Gift Announced

UNCW is proud to announce the single largest matching challenge gift ever extended to the Alumni Association. Offered by philanthropists Mark Griffis and Dave Robertson, this pledge of a $100,000 challenge is intended to spark new support for building alumni scholarships. The challenge will run through December 31, 2006.

”The UNCW Alumni Association truly appreciates this incredible offer from Mark and Dave. I hope all Seahawks will respond to the challenge with generous gifts, helping us increase scholarship opportunities for current and future students,” said Donis Noe Smith ’86, ’94M, chair if the Alumni Association Board of Directors.

Matching dollar for dollar, it is the goal of this challenge to support scholarship funds at any level.  It is the ultimate goal to use this challenge to endow scholarships so that the revenue generated from the endowments will help many students for many years to come. UNCW alumni who would like to establish a scholarship in honor or memory of a loved one could make a significant investment due to the match that will double their contribution.

The alumni association was established in 1969, and the tradition of alumni giving began. In 1980, the first scholarship was established. In 2006, the alumni association support has grown to 15 merit scholarships. In the past 26 years, over $315,000 has been awarded to outstanding students.
