This photo album comprises a variety of shots of the kids working with tutors. Each tutoring afternoon runs from 4:00-5:00 p.m. From 4:00-4:15, we provide the children with an after-school snack (apples, goldfish, popcorn, and the like, as well as a cup of juice). Tutoring sessions begin at 4:15 and typically last 20-25 minutes. After the tutoring, the kids can use the computers provided to the Hillcrest Campus by UNCW's Information Technology Systems Division, use coloring books, or read a regular story book, often with one of their tutors.
We have also had a number of guests visit the program. In the top right photo, Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo chats with one of our tutors and one of our children. In the background, Mr. Steve Demski -- UNCW's Vice Chancellor for Public Service is chatting with one of the children and the child's tutor. On the occasion of her second visit, in December, she invited Ms. Hannah Gage, Chairwoman of the University of North Carolina System's Board of Governors (see below right)/ |

We also worked with four older children, that placed out of 100 Easy Lessons. For these children, we created a novel reading group, to help the kids develop fluency, build vocabulary and strengthen comprehension. |
