Reel Girls

Mini-documentaries, focusing on the real lives of middle school girls compared to images of girls in media.  UNCW Women’s Studies and Film Studies assisted DC Virgo Middle School girls in the creation and production of their own Documentaries.  The films will be screened at UNCW’s Lumina Theatre on April 29.

Lumina Theatre:  Four UNCW students and four UNCW faculty members have paired up with twenty-four D.C. Virgo middle school girls to create mini-documentaries focusing on their own lives in comparison with the ways in which women and girls are portrayed in the media. From the films created in The Reel Girls Project, student members, both college and middle school, will coordinate and promote an on-campus screening that will allow the girls to share their vision and voices with the community. The screening, which is free to the public, will be shown at Lumina Theatre at 6:30 on April 29.  The screening will be followed with a discussion by the students.

Purpose:
The Wilmington and UNCW communities are very involved in film. The Reel Girls Project is a non-profit mentoring project which encourages girls to take a critical look at the portrayal of women and girls in the media and to motivate them to consider the creative and technical roles in the film industry that are typically filled by males.
