Internship Opportunities

The Internship in Women’s Studies offers practical experience and training through a program of work and study within an agency or setting related to the student's principal area of interest. It is designed for students who:

-Wish to have WMS internship credit specifically listed on their transcripts as a way of enhancing educational or professional credentials; or
-Are interested in women’s issues but whose major or minor disciplines do not offer internship credit.

Local sites currently approved for internships include:

-UNCW Women’s Resource Center
-Rape Crisis Center of Coastal Horizons, Inc.
-Domestic Violence Shelter and Services
-New Hanover Commission for Women

Other exciting women’s studies internship opportunities are available throughout North Carolina and the United States.

Students interested in enrolling in the Internship in Women's Studies must have junior or senior standing and have completed a minimum of 12 hours in coursework in women’s studies or obtain consent of the Women’s Studies coordinator. Area of concentration, requirements, and means of evaluation will be defined in consultation with supervising faculty.

For more information or advising, please contact the WRC by sending an e-mail to WRC@uncw.edu or call 910-962-7870.

Directed Independent Study

Students who are currently enrolled in the WMS minor course of study may choose to earn 1-3 credit hours for an independent project completed within one semester. The project will involve investigation of an approved topic under faculty supervision, beyond what is offered in existing courses. For more information or advising, please contact the WRC by sending an e-mail to WRC@uncw.edu or call 910-962-7870.

Volunteer Opportunities

The Women’s Resource Center offers many enriching volunteer opportunities for anyone who wishes to become more actively involved in our programs. These include:

-Program and event planning;
-Participating in our annual production of The Vagina Monologues;
-Serving on committees (e.g., Women’s History Month);
-Hanging flyers and posters;
-Tabling events;
-Hosting guest speakers and other visitors;
-Visiting classes and meetings on behalf of the Women’s Resource Center; and much more!

Volunteering for the Women’s Resource Center is a great way to get involved on campus and in the community, to build leadership skills, and to meet like-minded people. If you are interested in volunteering—or if you have your own ideas for how you might contribute to the Women’s Resource Center—please contact the Director of the Women’s Resource Center by sending an e-mail to WRC@uncw.edu or calling 910-962-7870.
