On
teaching
It is my goal in writing workshops
to lead students into "battle with the inexpressible,"
or facilitate that battle, should students already find themselves
on the front lines. I am especially interested in those moments
in fiction that are most inexplicable, inevitable, intuitive, devastating,
holy—I want to know why and how they work.
"But there are always a few artists ghosting around who invite
us to do the work of beauty, and who give us back our humor when
we are terrified." —Carol Bly, "The Apprentice"
