UNCW and other UNC campuses, with approval from the UNC Board of Governors, have authority to designate some areas on campus as a “millennial campus.” The Centennial Campus at N.C. State University was the first of these.
The purpose of a millennial campus is to promote economic development, entrepreneurial activity, and partnerships with the private sector, built upon knowledge, research and expertise resident within the university community. Millennial campuses provide valuable educational and training opportunities for students as they develop their careers. They also permit access to new sources of funding, both public and private. Activities on a millennial campus are exempt from the Umstead Act, thus allowing the university and its partners to engage in activities that generate revenues.
The provost has asked several individuals to begin implementation of recommendations made to the chancellor by the Millennial Campus Committee (pdf), engaging faculty in the process, identifying the types of projects and activities that would benefit from a millennial campus setting, and developing strategies and next steps in this exciting and promising initiative.
