UNCW is committed to providing educational opportunities for members of our community. In addition to traditional, degree-oriented courses, the university offers classes and lectures on a variety of subjects, including the following:
Continuing Studies
- Twice a year, during January and September, UNCW Division of Public Service and Continuing Studies offers a wide variety of learning adventures to appeal to every audience. The Pathways catalogue, published twice a year, lists courses and lectures on everything from cooking to religion to foreign languages to travel abroad opportunities. You will find it as an insert in the Wilmington Star-News, but you can also obtain copies at the Center for Marine Science, the Human Resources location at 50151 New Center Dr., Executive Development Center, and the local libraries.
Arts
- Cultural Arts Lectures and Readings
The UNCW Office of Cultural Arts offers a series of readings and lectures, including the Buckner Lecture Series; One Book, One Community; Leadership Lecture Series; Readers Series and Writer's Week Symposium
- Movie Makers and Lecture Series
Normally held bi-monthly during the academic school year, the UNCW Film Studies Department offers a series of talks by local and visiting filmmakers. Movie industry insiders—actors, directors, cinematographers, editors, independent filmmakers, screenwriters, grips, producers, makeup artists, agents and others—share with film students about the behind the scenes operations in the entertainment industry.
Guests thus far have included renowned documentarian Frederick Wiseman, Jerry Zeismer (1st Assistant Director for Apocalypse Now), Samm-Art Williams (award winning playwright, screenwriter, producer, and actor in Coen brother’s Blood Simple), cinematographer Tom Priestly, Jr. (camera operator Amadeus, Sophie’s Choice, Kramer vs. Kramer). These talks are free and open to the public.
