About Our Athletic Programs
UNCW sponsors 19 Varsity teams, including men’s and women’s programs in basketball, tennis, golf, track and field, cross country, swimming, diving and soccer. Other varsity programs include volleyball, softball and baseball. Athletic facilities include the 6,100-seat Trask Auditorium; an Olympic-sized natatorium with diving well: a 3,000 seat baseball stadium, Brooks Field; a 2,000-seat soccer stadium; The Harold Greene Track and Field Complex; and Boseman Softball Field. All events are open to the public.
With an outstanding track record inside and outside the classroom, UNCW features one of the top programs on the NCAA Division I tier.
In 2004-05, the Seahawks featured 330 student-athletes from 33 different states and 11 foreign countries. The group captured Colonial Athletic Association championships in men’s swimming and diving, men’s golf and men’s track and field.
Academically, UNCW’s student-athletes performed well, combining to post close to a 3.00 cumulative grade point average. Fifteen of those students achieved a perfect 4.00 GPA in the spring semester, 119 earned the Colonial Athletic Association’s Commissioner’s Academic Award for recording a 3.20 GPA or better during their competition period and 138 collected the school’s Golden Seahawk Award for a minimum 3.25 GPA over the course of the entire year.
Two students, swimming and diving’s Michael Krayer and women’s golf’s Michelle Jarman, were selected CAA Scholar Athlete-of-the-Year in their respective sports. Another, women’s soccer standout Caroline Renkin, finished second nationally in balloting for the John Wooden Trophy presented by Athletes For A Better World and was honored during a special ceremony in Los Angeles.
Over the last nine years, the Seahawks have captured 22 conference championships and made numerous NCAA post-season appearances. Since joining the CAA, a total of 29 coaches have been recognized as the league’s Coach-of-the-Year.
