The Youth Health Summit is funded through a grant from the North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation. The Foundation has provided funds for the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) School of Nursing to support the expansion of a nursing and health academy, Camp BONES. Funds are also provided to allow UNCW to collaborate with Winston-Salem State University Division of Nursing to replicate Camp BONES in Forsyth and surrounding counties. Camp BONES prepares underrepresented adolescents for nursing and health science careers with the eventual goal of preparing them to meet the diverse needs of North Carolinians through health promotion, advocacy, and service.
One of the activities of the nursing and health academy is to provide health promotion programs through yearly Youth Health Summits. The goal of the Summit is to bring awareness of adolescent health issues to a broader group of adolescents in southeastern North Carolina who are not enrolled in Camp BONES. Camp BONES academy members will be co-leaders with nursing and health partners to deliver the health promotion topics to other youth.
