2016 Summer Programs

Improve your critical thinking skills and stimulate your scientific curiosity performing fun experiments at the UNCW Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry!

Special Opportunity for Full-Day Camp Experience includes a 15% Discount! Students may attend two camps during the same week for an opportunity to have a full-day camp experience! For example, students can attend a fun-filled chemistry camp during the morning session and then learn about crime scene investigation in forensics camp during the afternoon.  Supervision and fun activities will be provided during interim period, lunch provided from home.

Week 1: June 20 - 24, 2016

THE BIG BANG Chemistry and Biochemistry Camp
Ages: 11 - 14
Time: 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Gender: Co-ed

Investigate the amazing chemistry of earth and space using advanced college-level instruments to give you an edge in science classes and beyond.  Experience cool interactions of chemicals that produce light, heat, and fireworks.  Learn the diverse role of proteins in all living things!

FORENSICS: PORT CITY CSI Camp
Ages: 11 - 14
Time: 1:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Gender: Co-ed

Get involved in learning behind-the-scenes advanced methods and techniques used by crime scene investigators.  Learn the current forensic techniques including DNA analysis to interpret evidence, analyze data, and close the case!

Week 2: July 11 - 15, 2016

COMPOUND CHAOS! Chemistry Camp
Ages: 7 - 10
Time: 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Gender: Co-ed

Participate in a week of exciting hands-on experiments sure to cause chaos while learning the basic fundamentals of chemical reactions in a real college laboratory. Make your own chemical concoctions and turn a penny into gold!

CRIMINAL SOLUTIONS Forensics Camp
Ages: 7 - 10
Time: 1:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Gender: Co-ed

Grab your gloves and evidence bags as we go sleuthing for criminal solutions.  Join us while we gather clues, test data, and use deductive reasoning to solve the crime – just like a real forensic scientist!

Week 3: July 18 - 22, 2016

GIRLS IN CHARGE Chemistry and Biochemistry Camp
Ages: 8 - 12
Time: 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Gender: Girls only

Hey girls, get charged up about science and learn the chemical secrets of creating cosmetics, perfume, paints, and more!  Learn the vital roles of the biochemicals in all living things.  Create your own jewelry, crystals, and isolate your own DNA.  Instructors will guide you in the essentials for becoming a woman scientist!

BOND GIRLS Forensics Camp
Ages: 8 - 12
Time: 1:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Gender: Girls only

Spend a week doing undercover investigating of forensic science. This unique camp will allow you to take a leadership role in learning how chemistry is used to solve crime mysteries.  A woman mentor will guide you towards your future forensic science career!
