Message from Chancellor Aswani K. Volety
Dear UNCW Community:
To the more than 2,900 new alumni who earned degrees during this month’s commencement ceremonies: Congratulations! We honored graduates in five ceremonies, one for each of the university’s four colleges as well as the first we've had just for graduate students. As they lift off from UNCW and soar, we welcome them to the lifelong Seahawk family.
Ensuring that everyone is included and supported in this family from the start is at the foundation of our mission as a public institution. UNCW provides, and will continue to provide, an outstanding educational experience for Seahawks from all walks of life. We are committed to fostering dialogue and to modeling how to build understanding through the search for truth and knowledge.
Our faculty and staff embody these values, and we honor some of those who put this excellence on display. We held our annual UNCW Staff Award for Excellence reception this month to recognize members of the campus community who have excelled in their service to UNCW. The Office of Faculty Affairs also hosted its inaugural Faculty Awards Celebration to recognize outstanding achievements in teaching and scholarship.
A team led by Eman Ghoneim of the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences discovered the pyramids in Egypt were built along a now abandoned branch of the Nile River, highlighting how humans have historically been affected by environmental change. Associate Professor of Chemistry Ying Wang has been approved for grant funding from NCInnovation to continue developing a groundbreaking vaccine platform that he hopes will result in a universal and longer-lasting flu vaccine.
We’re excited to celebrate two new Coastal Athletic Association Championships. Our baseball team claimed its eighth CAA title overall, and second straight, carrying a record of 39-19 into the NCAA regionals. Our softball team took its second CAA title in three seasons with a seventh-inning comeback win.
As recent graduates fly toward new opportunities, I remind the entire Seahawk community that we are a part of a powerful teal network of alumni, faculty, staff, friends and donors who believe in this university and the UNCW experience.
Yours in Seahawk spirit,
