Knowledge of women's and gender issues is valuable in non-profit work and community advocacy.

Learn To

Understand and effectively articulate the roles gender and sexuality play in different cultural contexts

Analyze how people with minoritized gender and sexual identities participate in, contribute to and transform areas of social life including culture, politics, family, economy, healthcare and religion

Explore the intersections of gender and sexuality with systems of oppression

Develop strategies for advancing justice and equality for all women and LGBTQIA+ people

Take part in internship and scholarship opportunities to apply the knowledge you acquire in the classroom

Women’s and Gender Studies Minor Program Overview

Study Gender and Sexuality Topics

The minor provides interdisciplinary and intersectional analyses of constructions of gender and sexuality. Students examine the status of girls, women and marginalized groups and identities from a variety of historical, cultural and theoretical perspectives.

You are required to take one core WGS course (WGS 210: Introduction to Gender Studies), but there are a wide variety of core and elective courses to choose from that most closely align with their major field of study.

This makes the WGS minor an interdisciplinary minor that can be obtained without adding an additional workload.

The Gender Studies and Resource Center encourages students to study abroad as part of their UNCW degree and has identified preferred programs and partner schools targeted to match your academic interests.
