Art Education (K-12), Post-Baccalaureate Certificate

This graduate certificate program is designed for individuals who hold a bachelor's degree in art or a related field and want to become licensed art teachers in North Carolina public schools. The program serves residency teachers who are already employed in North Carolina schools, non-certified teaching assistants and career changers seeking to enter the teaching profession.

Coursework is aligned with North Carolina licensure requirements and prepares candidates for K–12 art teacher licensure.

Designed with working professionals in mind, the program is offered entirely online, providing the flexibility to balance coursework with professional and personal commitments.

Field experiences are tailored to each candidate's pathway:

• Residency teachers may complete field experiences and student teaching in their own classrooms.
• Teaching assistants may complete field experiences in their current schools or school districts.
• Candidates who are not currently employed in schools complete field experiences in K–12 classrooms and a full-time semester of student teaching arranged through Watson's Professional Experiences Office.

Courses are taught by experienced art education faculty who bring extensive K–12 classroom expertise and mentorship to the program.

The graduate certificate is a stand-alone licensure pathway rather than a degree program. However, all certificate coursework may be applied toward the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Art Education, providing a seamless path for candidates who choose to continue their graduate studies.
