Name:

Tom Gale

Graduation Date: May 1998
Position Title: REALTOR/ Team Captain
Company: Team Gale at Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Advantage
Current Location: Wilmington, NC

What was your favorite class in the COM Department? Why?
Advanced Video Production because we got to go out and shoot and edit a real video that was used by the University.

What organizations/groups were you involved in while you were a student?
Freshman and Sophomore Class Senator and Junior and Senior Class President in SGA, DJ and General Manager of WLOZ (the former campus radio station), Campus Judicial Board, Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, Catholic Campus Ministries, Production Technician at the University Center/Union

How are you using the skills/concepts learned from your COM degree in your life?
As a REALTOR, I wear many hats. I need to effectively negotiate to get the listing and price it correctly, market it to other REALTORS and buyers, negotiate the sales price and any repairs, communicate with attorneys, lenders, inspectors, homeowners associations, etc. As a captain of a real estate team, I also am in charge of selecting and leading my staff and motivating and coaching my agents. All of these duties require me to communicate on many levels, so whether it’s interpersonal, small group, or mass communication, my degree from Communication Studies at UNCW provided the foundation to be effective in those roles.

What are your proudest accomplishments since graduating from UNCW?
I am a very proud father of two great kids (with my wife, who I met at UNCW). Work accomplishments would probably be that my team has been the number one team for the last five years at the number one real estate company in Southeastern NC. I’m also proud to still be an active UNCW alum, currently serving as an Alumni Board member, UNCW Men’s basketball season ticket holder, etc.

Communication is. . . critical.

What advice would you give current COM majors?
Get involved. You’ll get experience, make friends, and network. I got a lot out of everything I was involved with but, in particular, my time as the GM of WLOZ was probably the single best learning lab anyone could possibly have. I started out as a DJ because I love music. A year later, the student GM slot opened. I threw my hat in the ring, got the position and loved it.
