2016-17 Health & Safety Information from EH&S

EH&S is dedicated to sustaining a safe and productive campus environment to support the safety and success of our students, faculty, staff and visitors. Please review the following information and resources to help foster a strong culture of safety on our campus.

Take Action - The “Take Action” infographic outlines how to respond when accidents or medical emergencies occur on campus. EH&S encourages you to post the infographic in classrooms and work areas as needed.

UNCW Alert – UNCW Alert is a suite of emergency notification tools the university uses to inform the campus community about emergency events requiring immediate sheltering in place or evacuation. Students and visitors naturally look to faculty and staff for guidance during times of emergency. To stay informed, please sign up for UNCW Alert voice and text notifications by logging into MySeaport and clicking “Register to Receive UNCW Emergency Texts” on the lower left side of the page.  For further information, please go to www.uncw.edu/emergencyandsafety/

Safety Data Sheets – There are a variety of chemical and other materials that faculty and staff utilize both in shops and in laboratories at UNCW.  EH&S has contracted with MSDS Online to provide convenient access to the safety data sheets associated with the materials, including appropriate safety and hazard information.  To access this database, contact EH&S at 910.962.3057 for the username and password and then log in to www.msdsonline.com. Unique departmental logins are also available to provide more options for location-specific data sheets.

Fight the Bite - UNCW continuously monitors the threats posed by mosquito-borne diseases such as Zika, Dengue, West Nile and Chikungunya. For more information, especially before traveling, visit https://www.uncw.edu/ehs/zika.html and www.cdc.gov/zika. When in mosquito prone areas, use an EPA-registered insect repellent with DEET, picaridin, RR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus or para-menthanediol.

Training – EH&S offers a variety of safety training opportunities, including: CPR/ AED/ First Aid, preparing for emergencies, how to complete your job more safely, and departmental specific safety training. In the coming months, EH&S will be expanding training options as we introduce an online learning management system to better fit your schedule. As part of this new system, we are excited to offer in-person virtual reality fire extinguisher training for your department at a time and location convenient to you. If you have any questions regarding this or other training, please contact EH&S at 910.962.3057 or visit https://uncw.edu/ehs/training.html

EH&S has a staff of trained professionals who are here to assist the UNCW community in a variety of workplace safety, environmental health concerns, fire safety and emergency management. We welcome the opportunity to assist you in your activities at UNCW by providing training, consultation, waste disposal and regulatory support services. We welcome the opportunity to come to your staff meetings and provide brief overviews on one or more of these services.

Thank you and have a great academic year.  Do not hesitate to contact us at 910.962.3057 or email me at hartss@uncw.edu for further assistance.
