Petitions

Substitutions, Waivers and Exit Requirements


Substitutions, Waivers and Exit Requirements will now be entered on the Petitions tab in Degree Works. 

Note: The substitution/waiver and other pdf forms will only be accepted for those students that are still in the old degree audit system.


  1. Access a student’s worksheet (degree audit) in SeaNet.
  2. Click on the Petitions tab.
  3. Click Add Petition (left margin)
  4. Enter the information in the free form box.
  5. Click submit.

Please enter a petition for each course substitution. Be descriptive and provide clear justification with each substitution.

Ex) Sub XXX 591 for XXX 546. Student covered similar content in the DIS course…..

Ex) Allow XXX 592 to count under XXXXXX requirement. Student was advised to…..

Ex) Allow XXX 551 to count as an elective. This course is a relevant elective…..

Note: Petitions not entered correctly will be rejected. A new petition will need to be entered if a petition is rejected.


Please enter a petition for each exit requirement on the audit.
Please state the requirement as listed on the audit, that requirement was passed, successfully completed, failed, etc., and the date the requirement was completed.

               Ex) Comprehensive Exam was passed, Aug 6th 2016, MS Biology

               Ex) Thesis Defense was passed, Jun 5th 2015, MA Psychology

               Ex) Final Project was successfully completed, Dec 7th 2016, MA Liberal Studies

               Ex) Culminating Project was successfully completed, May 2nd 2015, MED Higher Education

**Please do not send a petition for the following, as these will be cleared by the Graduate School when student submit the appropriate materials to the Graduate School:

  • Draft Thesis
  • Format Approval Sheet
  • Final Thesis
  • Signed Title Page
  • ETD Submission Form
  • Applied to Graduate (Will clear when a student has applied to graduation in SeaNet)
  • Enrolled in Semester of Graduation (Will clear when student registers in the same term as they are scheduled to graduate)

 Note: Petitions not entered correctly will be rejected.  A new petition will need to be entered if a petition is rejected.


Please enter a petition for each waiver and provide a clear justification for each waiver.


When all requirements are complete on the student's audit, please enter a peition stating that the student has met all program requirements and that the program approves the student for final graduation clearance.


There are four petitions statuses:

  1. Petitions Awaiting Approval
  2. Petitions Approved
  3. Petitions Applied as Exceptions
  4. Petitions Rejected

1. Petitions Awaiting Approval - are petitions that have been entered by an advisor or Graduate Coordinator that have not yet been approved.

2. Petitions Approved - are petitions that have been completely approved and are ready to be applied to the student’s worksheet (degree audit). 

3. Petitions Applied as Exceptions - are petitions that have been approved and processed to show on the worksheet.  Once applied these will show both on the requirement that petition was applied to and also at the bottom of the audit.  All course substitutions will show as applied as exception if approved and processed.

4. Petition Rejected – are petitions that were not approved or could not be applied as entered. Rejected petitions that need correction will need to be entered as a new petition.

Petitions and status of petitions can be viewed by the student, advisor and administrative staff.
