Cold and Flu Update January 30, 2018

The Student Health Center continues to diagnose cases of the flu on campus each day. New Hanover County and the state are reporting wide spread flu activity. In an effort to help prevent new cases, and to help support your health in general during cold and flu season and beyond, please take note of the below information, based largely on guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

  • Get a flu vaccination each year. It is not too late to get the vaccine this season (students can do so at the Student Health Center). While it may not protect you 100% from getting sick, it will likely shorten the intensity and duration of flu.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water throughout the day. If you are not near a sink, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze. Cough or sneeze into your elbow if you do not have a tissue.
  • While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects frequently. Remember to clean your cell phone or phone handset, doorknobs, and keyboards. Housekeeping is doing special cleaning of high-touch surfaces on campus during flu season.
  • Stay home from work or school until you are fever-free for 24 hours, without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.
  • If you have any underlying chronic health conditions and you think you may have the flu, check with your doctor to see if you should take Tamiflu.

Flu-like symptoms typically have a rapid onset. A comparison of flu symptoms and cold symptoms is available at www.cdc.gov/flu/consumer/symptoms.htm
