Governor Cooper Appoints UNCW General Counsel John P. Scherer II to NC Veterans Affairs Commission

Wednesday, January 09, 2019

Governor Roy Cooper recently announced 40 new appointments to various North Carolina boards and commissions, including the appointment of UNCW General Counsel John Scherer to the NC Veterans Affairs Commission. This commission advises the Secretary of Military and Veterans Affairs. The commission maintains a continuing review of existing programs for veterans and their dependents and is responsible for promoting scholarship guidelines to the children of North Carolina veterans.

Ensuring an accessible and affordable UNCW education to North Carolina residents and fostering collaborative partnerships are key priorities of the university’s Strategic Plan.

“As a veteran, I’m deeply dedicated to helping North Carolina and our nation honor their commitment to them – a commitment that, in my opinion, should ensure each veteran has the opportunity to gain an education, find a rewarding and productive job, and receive excellent physical and mental health care,” said Scherer. “Within this new role, I aim to learn about all of the excellent work being done by the NC Department of Military Affairs and the Veterans Affairs Commission, and to assist them in maintaining and improving that work through my military and legal experience.”

Scherer has a long history of military service, devoting 11 years as an active-duty, then reserve, JAG officer. During his tenure, he advised commanders, military-affiliated entities and individual soldiers on a wide variety of military justice matters, and provided guidance on everything from general legal issues like wills, administrative military discipline and divorce to environmental, labor and federal employment law. Both of his grandfathers also served in the U.S. Army.

Scherer’s appointment will run through June 2021.
