Victoria Valdes, assistant director of Housing and Residence Life, received the Susan Grant Award for Outstanding Mentorship at the North Carolina Housing Officers annual conference, held Oct. 13-15, at Winston-Salem State University.

The award recognizes housing and residence life professionals who demonstrate exceptional dedication to mentoring students and staff, supporting their personal and professional growth and encouraging excellence in the field.

Valdes was recognized for her investment in the career development of those she leads and serves at UNCW and beyond. Through her guidance, creativity and support, she helps mentees build confidence, develop their skills and pursue their professional goals.

Deeply honored by the award, Valdes expresses gratitude to the HRL team for continued support.

“Most of my career has been achieved with the help of my own mentors, so to be recognized for my own contribution to the field and the UNCW community is empowering. Mentorship has always been one of the most rewarding parts of my job and seeing others embrace their full potential and grow into amazing leaders fuels my passion for the work,” said Valdes. “This award serves as a reminder that the everyday work does matter, and I am proud that my contributions have left an impact here at UNCW.”

Award recipients provide constructive feedback, encourage independent thinking and challenge mentees to reach their full potential through training, presentations, projects and meaningful contributions to the housing and residence life community.
