My name is Kim Falcone Sousa, and I’m a proud UNCW alumna. I graduated in 1994 with a degree in Business Management, and I can honestly say that my four years at UNCW changed me, shaped me and prepared me for the future.
Between the people I met, the courses I took, playing volleyball at Capt’n Bills, joining Alpha Gamma Delta, working with the Association of Campus Entertainment (ACE) and working in the University Union, I enjoyed every minute of my college experience.
I grew up in Syracuse, New York, and was nervous about attending UNCW so far from my family. Looking back, it was the best decision I ever made.
Although I moved to Boston shortly after graduation and spent the next 25 years building my life, family and career there, we frequently vacationed in Wrightsville Beach, and I always knew I would find my way back.
That day finally came in 2024, when my family and I moved back to Wilmington. I’m even more excited and proud that my youngest daughter, Taylor, is now a fellow Seahawk, graduating in 2028.
Finding My Way Back to UNCW
Even while living in Boston, I stayed connected to UNCW as a virtual member of the Cameron School of Business Alumni Chapter. It was a great way to learn about the university’s progress and get to know staff who introduced me to other opportunities to become involved.
That’s how I learned about the UNCW Alumni Association Board of Directors. I joined in 2021, and from our very first meeting, I was greeted by the warmest staff and group of people. I immediately felt at home.
As I begin the final year of my tenure, I’m honored to serve as board chair. I’ve made some fantastic friends through the board, which has meant even more as we relocated back to the Wilmington area.
Over these past five years, I’ve learned so much about UNCW: how the university operates, why fundraising is so important and the exciting growth and opportunities taking place across campus.
At each board meeting, we hear from deans and administrators, learn what’s happening across the university, and provide feedback on the issues and opportunities facing UNCW.
One of our important missions is connecting with alumni and encouraging them to return to campus, attend events and stay informed about what’s happening at UNCW.
Celebrating Our Alumni
One of the board’s most rewarding responsibilities is selecting recipients for the annual Distinguished Alumni Awards.
It is such an eye-opening process to see the incredible things our Seahawk nominees are doing and accomplishing. Wow! It’s always difficult to choose the recipients, but incredibly rewarding to spotlight their achievements and have the opportunity to meet them.
I also love coming back to campus for events. It’s fun to see the students, the growth, the new buildings and, of course, the “older” buildings I used to walk through every day!
Homecoming is always a favorite. It’s wonderful to run into old friends and meet new ones as we all share that connection to UNCW. Come back for Homecoming this year. I promise you won’t be disappointed!
Another favorite is Wagsgiving, a Thanksgiving celebration at Wagoner Hall that has become a can’t-miss tradition in the Sousa household. Between the food, activities and opportunities to sit with students and hear about their lives, it’s a wonderful way to feel connected to our campus community.
Why I Give Back
I was naïve when I graduated from college. I thought that when the university reached out for financial support, you had to give something significant for it to make a difference.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned during my years on the Alumni Board, it’s that every contribution matters. With more than 115,000 alumni, those gifts add up and help move amazing projects and initiatives forward. I wish I had started giving earlier.
Now that I’m more established in my life and career, I’ve enjoyed learning about the university’s needs and supporting the programs and priorities I want to see grow.
I’m thrilled to be part of the new WaveMakers Society. It feels good to support my alma mater and an institution that all of us alumni know is a very special place. Giving also keeps me connected to what’s happening at UNCW and introduces me to new opportunities to get involved.
With a daughter attending UNCW, I’ve also joined the Parents Council, which has introduced me to an entirely new group of parents. It’s another great way to connect, share experiences and support one another.
Come Be Part of It
If you ever have questions about becoming a more active alum or about the university in general, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
I couldn’t be more excited about the year ahead, and I think you will be blown away by what’s to come.
Come back. Get involved. Stay connected. Be a part of it!
Once a Seahawk, always a Seahawk.
