Featured Expert Spotlight: Matt Gercak on Microsoft Authenticator Advantages

This semester, we're highlighting Matt Gercak, IT Security Engineer, as our featured subject matter expert. He recently shared his thoughts on the question, “Why is Microsoft Authenticator beneficial to UNCW?”

Why is Microsoft Authenticator beneficial to UNCW?

First, let's talk integration.

Many of the tools we use every day, from Outlook and Teams to OneDrive and SharePoint, are within Microsoft 365. Authenticator is in that same Microsoft ecosystem, unlike Duo, which works alongside it. That means Authenticator speaks the same language as the services it protects, making sign-ins smoother and more reliable.

Next, let's talk passwordless sign-in.

Instead of typing a password and then confirming your identity on your phone, Authenticator can use your device’s security, like Face ID, Touch ID or a PIN, to verify it’s you. It combines something you have (your registered device) with something only you can provide (your fingerprint or passcode). The result is a simpler way to securely sign in without typing a password at all.

Finally, let's talk security.

Text message codes have long been a common way to add a second layer of security. Turns out, they're not as secure because those codes can be intercepted or stolen by attackers. Authenticator provides stronger protection through features like passcodes, number matching and biometric sign-in, making it harder for someone to gain unauthorized access to your account. When you're protecting student records, research data, financial aid information and payroll, that stronger security matters.

Our featured expert this semester is Matt Gercak (MG), an IT Security Engineer. We asked him several questions to get to know him better:

Q: What interests you in cyber security?

MG: Cyber security is such a dynamic, eventful field of study. I love how one day you are investigating alerts, and another you could be researching how to secure groundbreaking research. There is no limit to growth, no limit to specialization and incredible purpose to your work.

Q: What are three websites, magazines or organizations you would like to share with our readers?

MG: 

• NC Cybersecurity Response Force: There are incredible resources here. Amazing team, one of the best in the country. They live, eat, breathe their mission and it shows.
• TLDR Tech: Great site to stay up to date on a lot of tech-related news. Articles are to the point and quick reads.
• Varonis Security FWD: Really interesting web show by Varonis. They do some pretty incredible studies that are worth the watch.

Q: What is your favorite place on campus?

MG: The CAB Art Gallery; my mom and sister are artists. It really helps me to escape and reflect while walking through their latest gallery.

Q: Do you have any hobbies?

MG: My hobbies include replica prop making, baking bread and surfing!

Q: Are you more of a beach person or a downtown person?

MG: As you might have guessed from the previous question, 200% a beach person! There is never a bad time to catch some time at the beach!
