I received notification that I will receive a surcharge this semester, but I do not think I am eligible-who should I contact to question that?
If you believe that your surcharge eligibility has been calculated in error, please email the Office of the Registrar immediately with your concern. In the email, please detail why you believe yourself to be not eligible for the surcharge. Please email Freeman Whitney, Associate Registrar (whitneyj@uncw.edu).

Do my hours from an Early College or Dual Enrollment program count against me when surcharge eligibility is calculated?
No, per state policy, college hours earned prior to your high school graduation date are excluded from counting in your progress toward tuition surcharge.

Do my hours from a testing program such as Advanced Placement, CLEP, or International Baccalaureate count against me when surcharge eligibility is calculated?
No, per state policy, college hours earned for performance on approved exams are excluded from counting in your progress toward tuition surcharge.

How can I find out the amount of my surcharge?
Student Accounts determines the amount for students eligible to receive a surcharge and adjusts the student's E-Bill accordingly. Please first review your E-Bill and then direct any questions on the amount charged and other financial questions to Student Accounts at (910) 962-4281.

Will I face a surcharge if I exceed the surcharge threshold but graduate at the end of my eight semester?
No, you will not face a surcharge with the plan described. A student is ineligible to receive a surcharge until after the completion of the eighth college or university semester since having graduated from high school.

Is there an appeals process?
The State of North Carolina has established a waiver request process as part of the tuition surcharge policy. Please see this page for information on that process: https://www.uncw.edu/reg/tuitionSurch-waiver.html.

Why does UNCW have this policy?
The tuition surcharge policy is part of North Carolina law, so the decision to have this policy was not made by UNCW or the Office of the Registrar. UNCW is obligated to comply with legal requirements and follow the direction of UNC General Administration.

Who can assist me in applying for a surcharge waiver?
While the Office of the Registrar is able to assist any applicant in accessing the application form and locating relevant policy information about the surcharge and the waiver process, the office is not able to assist you in determining the suitability of your situation for the waiver process or the likelihood of an approval. Likewise, staff are not able to provide guidance to applicants on assembling documentation or preparing written statements.

What sort of supporting documents should I submit for my waiver?
The waiver application form provides direction on what types of information are useful in supporting the different waiver categories. The Office of the Registrar is not able to provide you further direction beyond what is found on the application form.

My waiver request was denied-are you able to explain the decision to me?
No, the Office of Registrar cannot address questions about the basis for the decisions made by the Tuition Surcharge Waiver Committee.

If I anticipate getting a surcharge next semester, or any future semester, can I request a waiver now?
No. While being proactive is commendable, the committee does not review waiver requests for future occurrences. The committee reviews waiver requests only for students who have been assessed a tuition surcharge for the current term.

I transferred to UNCW. How do you determine when I've reached my eighth semester?
Surcharge is only applicable after your eighth semester. All semesters are counted beginning with the first term following high school graduation. This would include enrolled semesters from your prior transfer institution(s). Semesters for which credit was earned prior to high school graduation are excluded.

Will the surcharge affect my financial aid award?
No, the tuition surcharge will not affect your current financial aid. However, you may want to contact the Office of Student Financial Aid at (910) 962-3177 to inquire about the possibility of increasing your cost of attendance to help cover some of the tuition surcharge amount.
