Design Guidelines

Architectural & Construction Services

The Design Guidelines serve as UNCW’s primary reference for planning, designing and delivering capital improvement and renovation projects. They establish consistent standards across disciplines so campus facilities support the university’s academic, operational and research mission.

Who Should Use These Guidelines

These guidelines are intended for architects, engineers, contractors, consultants and internal stakeholders involved in campus development. They outline minimum requirements, preferred solutions and best practices related to architecture, engineering systems, site development and supporting infrastructure.

Architectural Standards

The Architectural Standards establish the design requirements for new construction, renovations and building improvements across campus. They provide guidance on building materials, finishes, layouts and architectural elements to promote consistency, durability and long-term maintainability. These standards help ensure that projects support the university's functional needs while preserving its identity, enhancing the campus environment and meeting applicable codes and accessibility requirements.

Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing Standards

The Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) Standards define the requirements for designing and implementing building systems across campus facilities. They provide criteria for HVAC systems, electrical distribution, lighting, plumbing and related infrastructure to ensure safety, reliability and efficiency. These standards support consistent system performance, energy efficiency and ease of maintenance throughout the building lifecycle. They also ensure compliance with applicable codes, sustainability goals and campus operational requirements.
