Microsoft Copilot with Commercial Data Protection

Microsoft Copilot is an AI-powered chat assistant that can help you create content, summarize information, answer questions and simplify everyday tasks. At UNCW, there are two license options: Copilot Chat (Basic) and Copilot Chat (Premium). Your license determines where and how you can use Copilot.

Your Data Is Protected

The UNCW version of Copilot includes Commercial Data Protection to help protect university data when you use the tool. Your prompts and Copilot's responses are not stored or used to train the underlying AI models.

When you sign into Copilot, look for a green indicator (a shield and checkmark) in the top right-hand corner of the screen. If you see this indicator, you are using the commercial data protection version.

Ways Copilot Can Help

  • Draft reports and presentations with help generating content and improving your writing.
  • Identify key action items in Outlook by getting a snapshot of your inbox by topic or sender.
  • Write and refine emails by receiving an overview of conversations, drafting responses and adjusting tone, length and clarity.
  • Summarize documents and websites to quickly understand key information.
  • Conduct research for papers, assignments and other projects.
  • Get help writing code in several programming languages.
  • Create images for social media, articles, emails and other content.

Copilot Licenses

There are two Copilot options at UNCW: Basic and Premium. All faculty, staff and students have access to Basic, which includes Copilot Chat and Copilot in Outlook. Faculty and staff can upgrade to Premium for additional Copilot features directly in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote.

What Copilot license do I have?

Copilot Chat (Basic)

Copilot Chat (Basic), formerly called Microsoft Copilot Chat, is available at no additional cost to all UNCW faculty, staff and students.

Features

  • Use Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat to ask questions, create content, research topics and more.
  • Work more efficiently in Outlook with Copilot to manage email, calendar, communications and important information more easily.
  • Access limited Copilot features in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote for file-based assistance, such as summarizing content, generating or refining content and asking questions about the file you have open.

You can access it by selecting Microsoft 365 Copilot in the app launcher from mySeaport.

Copilot Chat (Premium)

Copilot Chat (Premium), formerly called Microsoft 365 Copilot, is a paid option available to faculty and staff.

Features

  • Use Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat
  • Use Copilot with Outlook email and calendar
  • Get the full Copilot experience in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote in addition to the features included with Basic.

Faculty and staff who want to keep using Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote can upgrade to Copilot Chat (Premium).
