Summer Programs at UNCW

UNCW's International Summer Programs (June 22 - July 20, 2027) are 4-week study abroad opportunities for international students to engage in hands-on learning, explore their academic interests, and experience American culture while living and studying on the North Carolina coast. 

Additionally, UNCW global university partners can submit a Faculty-Led Program Proposal to apply to bring student groups to UNCW over the summer between June 22 - July 20. Email international@uncw.edu for more information.

UNCW Summer International Research Experience (SIRE)

Info & Application Process

Spend your summer at UNCW exploring aquaculture, marine science, and coastal sustainability through hands-on learning and real-world experiences. Work alongside faculty, engage with innovative research, discover the beauty of North Carolina's coast, and connect with students from around the world. The Summer International Research Experience (SIRE) has two focus chapters for 2027: Aquaculture and Water Quality. Program Information 

Dates: June 22, 2027 – July 20, 2027 (4 weeks)

Estimated Cost: $3,600 which includes:
  • 6 excursions (Guided Southport Day Trip, Wilmington Sharks Game, Carnivorous Plant Garden Visit, Kayaking to Shark Tooth Island, Drone Flying Workshop, Sunset Boat Cruise)
  • 50 hours of lectures taught by UNCW faculty
  • Airport pick-up & drop-off
  • Housing with pool access
  • 28 on-campus meals

NOTE: The estimated cost does not include flight/travel and is subject to a 2-3 percent increase, as it is based on 2025-26 rates.

UNCW Southern Roots 2027

Info & Application Process

Through Southern Roots, we invite participants to explore the art, history, film, heritage, and communities that have shaped the American South, particularly Wilmington, North Carolina. Through faculty-led discussions, cultural excursions, and hands-on experiences, students gain a deeper understanding of the region's past and present while developing a global perspective on its cultural impact.   • 6 excursions (Guided Southport Day Trip, Historic Downtown Walking Tour, Wilmington Sharks Game, Cameron Art Museum Visit, Bellamy Mansion Tour, Downtown Ghost Tour)

  • Airport pick-up & drop-off
  • Housing with pool access
  • 28 on-campus meals

Global Partner Proposals

Global university partners can request a Faculty-Led Summer Program at UNCW.  Any program length is available between the dates of June 7, 2025 – July 23, 2025 and must include
  • Budget requirements
  • Minimum of 10 students
  • Accompanying on-campus faculty/chaperone
  • UNCW orientation & on-campus housing
  • (Optional Services) UNCW meal plans, academic classroom space, excursion planning & on-site emergency/transportation assistance
