Thomas Salzman

Thomas Salzman, Professor & Chair of the Department of Theatre, was director of the School of Stage & Screen at Western Carolina University, prior to coming to UNCW. He also served as Chair of the Performing Arts Department at College of Santa Fe, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Prior to that assignment, Professor Salzman was the General Manager/ Artistic Associate for the Caldwell Theatre Company in Boca Raton, FL where, as their Resident Lighting Designer for 18 years, he designed the lighting for over 80 productions, including 12 world premiers. His work with Caldwell garnered him two Best Lighting Designer Carbonell Awards, South Florida's answer to the "Tony" Awards. Mr. Salzman also owned his own design studio that emphasized theatrical lighting and special event coordination.

Other design credits include Coconut Grove Playhouse, Cleveland Play House, City Theatre Company (Miami), Playhouse Square Foundation (Cleveland), Florida Philharmonic, Heinz USA, PPG Inc., G.E. and others. Professor Salzman is a member of United Scenic Artist local #829, and is an Actors Equity Association Stage Manager. He has also taught at Penn State University and University of Miami, and holds an MFA from Carnegie Mellon University. Professor Salzman grew up outside Cleveland, OH, but his career has taken him all over the country, with stints in New York, Kansas City, Pittsburgh, Miami, Richmond, New Orleans and now Wilmington.
