What Can the Upperman Center Do for You, Our Campus, and Our Community?

Support

Develop and maintain programs and resources that support quality of life, academic excellence, social well-being, and a positive over-all experience for African American students at UNCW.

  • Advise students in academic planning, leadership and personal development opportunities through the Excellence Project, and exploring scholarly opportunities in research and applied learning experiences.
  • Develop programming, campus tours, and workshops for diverse students in partnership with campus and community partners to increase recruitment of African American students at UNCW, enhance student campus experiences, and connect students to important campus services and resources.
  • Provide a supportive, inclusive, and welcoming physical environment within the center for all students to:
    • encourage open dialogue across diverse experiences and perspectives
    • meet with academic study groups
    • nurture cross-cultural interactions.
  • Collaborate with student clubs and organizations, campus committees, other OIDI units, and community organizations and groups to provide students with opportunities to engage in meaningful service projects and open dialogue on diversity issues.

Education

Develop and present programs that explore and educate students, staff and community about the historical, cultural, social and artistic experiences of African Americans and other people of the African Diaspora.

  • Provide scholarly lectures, professional consultation and advising to academic and administrative departments.
  • Facilitate and host nationally renowned speakers for the Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration.
  • Host cultural celebrations and programs recognizing the impact and relevance of diversity, including: Africana Lecture and Film Series, Black Film Collective, Senior Sankofa and Pre-Kwanzaa Celebration.

Advocacy

Provide expertise about the African American student experience that affirmatively informs the practices, programs and policies of UNCW administration, Academic Affairs, and Student Affairs. Including:

  • Partner with Academic Affairs and Student Affairs in designing, implementing, and co-sponsoring a range of cultural programming that informs policy and supports the University's commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • Apply knowledge of research-based diversity initiatives and provide expert consultation related to campus-wide diversity and inclusion policies in support of student life and academic colleges.
  • Design and deliver tailored education and training services to enhance and support diversity and inclusion knowledge and best practices across administrative offices and academic programs.
  • Share best practices to inform recruitment and retention of a diverse workforce of faculty and staff.
  • Participate and present at national professional conferences (e.g. National Association for Multicultural Education, Association for Black Cultural Centers, American College and Personnel Association) to build staff expertise, and disseminate important information to campus on support and advocacy of African American students.
