Memorial Day is a holiday designed to give Americans the time to reflect upon and honor the sacrifices of those who gave their lives through military service so that we might continue the great American experiment. Some of us participate in Memorial Day events, while others take a few quiet minutes with family or on their own to remember the fallen.
The UNCW community – with more than 2,300 military-affiliated students, faculty and staff – recognizes the somberness of this occasion. The university, initially founded by New Hanover County citizens to provide educational opportunities for veterans returning from World War II, continues to emphasize service and dedication to veterans, active-duty, military-affiliated personnel and their families.
Memorial Day is, however, a celebration; we take this time to celebrate the faithful dedication of the few who gave their lives for the many and to aspire to similar levels of courage and generosity in our own lives. Even if you do not have a connection to the military, please take time to reflect upon and honor the sacrifices of those who gave their lives through military service. Celebrate what the service and sacrifice of loved ones or strangers have meant for your freedom.
This week, UNCW’s Office of Military Affairs will erect flags along College Road, the campus’s main entrances and Veterans Hall to honor our fallen military services members. The flags will be on display throughout the Memorial Day holiday. The community is welcome to walk through campus and take a moment to reflect.
