September 15, 2008 - A Blainville's beaked whale is
being examined by NC stranding coordinator, Bill
McLellan, Dr. Betsy Stringer from NCSU CMST, and
UNCW employee, Peter Nilsson.

On September 15, 2008 a female Blainville’s beaked whale stranded as a code 2 on Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Bodie Island, NC. The animal was first reported by a National Park Service law enforcement agent. The whale was pulled to a higher location on the beach and packed on ice. The UNCW stranding team received a called by NOAA Beaufort and asked if could assist in the response. The team left Wilmington arriving in Kitty Hawk that night.The following morning the animal was necropsied by the UNCW, National Park Service, North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission, and North Carolina State University. No final cause of death could be determined by the gross necropsy.
