‘Ecotech’ Helps Coastal Communities 

The North Carolina Ecosystem Technology project has been awarded $1 million from the U.S. National Science Foundation's Regional Innovation Engines, or NSF Engines, to develop an economic engine that could rapidly improve the quality of life in rural coastal communities using ecosystem technology, or ecotech, an emerging branch of applied science.

Protecting Caribbean Corals

UNCW researchers in collaboration with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History have discovered the first effective bacterial probiotic for treating and preventing stony coral tissue loss disease, a mysterious ailment that has devastated Florida’s coral reefs since 2014 and is rapidly spreading throughout the Caribbean.

Coastal Eco Explorer is a mobile application guiding Carolina Beach State Park hikers in the exploration of ecologically sensitive terrain. This pioneering app was created by faculty in the Watson College of Education in collaboration with North Caroline State Park rangers.
