Striped dolphin mass stranding
UNCW stranding volunteer Chris Duggan examines a striped
dolphin at the NCSU vet school
August 22, 2005
Early on the morning of August 22, 2005 sea turtle volunteers from Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Hospital on North Topsail Beach, NC found 15 striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) stranded on the beach. Twelve animals had already died on the beach, but three live animals were pushed off. UNCW stranding team members were called and responded at approximately 8am. We found 12 adult male striped dolphins dead on the beach and transported them to the North Carolina State University Veterinary School for necropsy. Researchers from NC State, the NOAA Beaufort Laboratory, the University of Tennessee and UNCW collaborativley participated in this stranding investigation.
