Thirty-one pilot whales mass stranded on Bodie Island, NC on January 15, 2005. A mass stranding of this magnitude required the collaborative efforts of many people and organizations. Stranding teams from 16 institutions were led by NOAA Fisheries Beaufort, and included UNCW, Duke Marine Laboratory, the Smithsonian Institution, NC State and the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center among others.
