Helpful Hints for Successful Course Submission
- Check out the new University Studies curriculum – a little study will allow you to see the various components into which you might submit courses and the Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) that each course will need to address.
- Remember that individual courses may appear in multiple components of the new curriculum, as long as the SLOs for each component are addressed. If submitting a single course for consideration in multiple components, include a single Course Proposal Cover Form, but include all appropriate Component Forms.
- Please consider joining with faculty from other disciplines to create a Transdisciplinary Cluster. Clusters may be initiated by faculty before courses are submitted or assembled with the help of the committee after submission. While we cannot predict the topics that may emerge on our campus, here is a link to a model system at Grand Valley State University.
- Be certain that the model syllabus that you submit includes a catalogue description.
- Be certain that your syllabus makes explicit how the course SLOs will link to the component SLOs (you can do this by putting the respective component SLO number in parentheses after the course SLO statement; see Sample Proposals).
- Verify that all forms all filled out completely.
- Save your documents often. Keep hard copies for your records.
- Follow the instructions for the course submission process:
1. All submissions must be sent from the e-mail address of the chair to the University Studies Advisory Committee.
2. Submit proposals as soon as possible and before the March 31, 2010 deadline. The committee will begin review of proposals as soon as they are received.
- While it is likely that you will have more SLOs for your course than are assigned to each component, if you do link a course SLO to a component SLO, please make sure that they match (SLOs on the syllabus and on the component form); see sample syllabi for a model.
- The Writing Intensive component form indicates that courses in this component should be 'upper-level' courses. The committee understands this to mean at the 200 level or above.
- Submissions for courses with a departmental prefix + 499 do not require a syllabus; just submit a cover form and component form(s).
