The University of North Carolina at Wilmington has become an anchor institution for the NC New Teacher Support Program (NTSP). The NC NTSP is a comprehensive, university-based induction program offering a research-based curriculum and multiple services designed to increase teacher effectiveness, enhance skills, and reduce attrition among beginning teachers. The NTSP program seeks to improve student achievement by improving beginning teacher effectiveness and teacher retention with three core services, including instructional coaching, regional professional development, and a beginning teacher professional development institute. An independent assessment of the NC NTSP, finds that the NC NTSP has demonstrated strong impact on teachers served. The NC NTSP serves approximately 1,300 beginning teachers in 53 school districts throughout North Carolina.
The UNCW NC NTSP Instructional Coaches are part of the Eastern Hub, with additional coaches based at ECU and led by Hub Leader Bradley Sasser (sasserb19@ecu.edu). The UNCW team currently supports beginning teachers in Sampson County, Onslow County, and DC Virgo Preparatory Academy.
