Welcome from the Chief of Police
On behalf of the UNCW Police Department, welcome to the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Thank you for taking the time to review this important information about the services, policies, and programs that help keep our campus community safe.
Our department exists to protect and serve the UNCW community. We recognize that many students are experiencing independence for the first time and will encounter new opportunities, challenges, and responsibilities. As part of the university team, our role extends beyond law enforcement. We strive to educate, support, and empower students to make informed decisions that reduce risk and promote personal safety. When challenges arise, we are committed to being there to provide assistance, guidance, and support.
Success for our department is measured not by the number of arrests made or citations issued, but by the positive impact we have on people’s lives. Our goal is to help students successfully navigate their time at UNCW and enjoy a safe, rewarding college experience.
We encourage you to get to know us, just as we look forward to getting to know you. The UNCW Police Department offers a variety of programs and opportunities to engage with our officers and staff, including
ride-alongs,
internship opportunities,
active attacker preparedness training,
self-defense classes, and other educational programs. We also host mixers like Coffee with a Cop and Lemonade with the Law to provide informal opportunities to ask questions, share concerns, and learn more about our approach to public safety. Otherwise, if you ever have questions about our practices, services, or philosophy of policing, we invite you to reach out. Our department is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year at
910-962-2222.
As the university's primary law enforcement and security agency, our officers complete the same basic training required of municipal police officers and county deputies throughout North Carolina. We build upon that foundation through ongoing professional development and specialized training designed to meet the unique needs of a university community.
While enhancing the safety and security of UNCW is our mission, campus safety is a shared responsibility. Although our officers patrol campus around the clock, we also work to provide students and employees with the knowledge, resources, and tools needed to help keep themselves and others safe.
One of those tools is the
UNCW Alert Safety App, available exclusively to students and employees. The app provides quick access to emergency services and campus resources, helping connect users with assistance whenever and wherever it is needed. Think of it as a mobile safety companion that travels with you, on campus and beyond.
For those who would like additional assistance after dark, UNCW Police officers and security personnel provide safety escorts throughout campus. Depending on availability, an officer or security guard can provide a walking or driving escort to help you reach your destination safely. If you do not feel comfortable walking alone, please call us.
We hope your time at UNCW is safe, successful, and truly UNC-Wonderful.
