is a distinct pleasure to welcome all to The Department of Art and Art History.
The department is located in the Cultural Arts Building, a state-of-the-arts
facility that opened in 2006. The building includes our primary Art Gallery,
the Mezzanine Student Gallery, art history lecture halls, ceramic and sculpture
studios, painting studios, drawing studios, graphic design computer lab,
printmaking studio, and both digital and darkroom photography labs. The
Cultural Arts Building also provides multi-use theatres and music performance
halls in the performance wing. Our department offers B.A. degrees in both Studio Art and Art History. Our curriculum is rich in traditional learning experiences, independent study and service learning opportunities, with a strong international component, including international study travel in France, Italy, and Spain, and soon, in South Africa. Our faculty is a dynamic group of artists and scholars whose publications and exhibitions span the globe. Faculty are committed to excellence in teaching and provide a broad innovative curriculum to meet the diverse needs of the UNCW campus, Southeastern North Carolina, and the global community. Our Visual Arts Database is an important repository for independent study research. The Art Gallery hosts national, international, student, and faculty exhibits. In addition to showcasing Senior Student Exhibits semiannually, recent exhibits are A Juried Exhibition of Letterpress Printing from the Southeastern U.S. in 2009, and The Art of Jairo Prado in 2008. For the 2009-2010 season, we will be exhibiting the art of sculptor, John Powers and painter, Sofia Kifl. The gallery is a dedicated exhibition space that serves an educational purpose and complements our programs. The department sponsors guest speakers who present public lectures in art and art history, as well as international visiting artists, and studio art demonstrations. A public reception is held for each exhibit. We partner with Louise Wells Cameron Art Museum, UNCW Presents, Creative Wilmington, Randall Library’s Sherman L Hayes Art Wall, and Independent Art Company to augment our in-house exhibitions. Student learning is the heart of both of our programs. In addition to core curriculum, accomplished and dedicated students create site-specific artworks, exhibit in juried competitions and regional galleries and museums. Students have internship opportunities at Louise Wells Cameron Art Museum and in local artists’ studios. At the center of student resources is the Art Circle, an official student organization that exists to bring students together outside of class in order to share and exchange experiences and information concerning the visual arts. Departmental scholarship opportunities include the Owen and Myrna Wexler Scholarship in Art, the Ann Flack Boseman Art Scholarship, the Kathleen Price Bryan Scholarship, the Forrest R. Lewis Family Scholarship, and the Bookstore Scholarship.
