CONTRA-TIEMPO urban latin dance theater
February 11 - 23, 2013
UNCW Artists in Residence - Project Summary
During two weeks of residency activities, which included nearly 40 workshops, master classes, performances and other events, UNCW Artists in Residence CONTRA-TIEMPO made the most of their visit to Wilmington, NC. The company engaged more than 2,500 participants, ranging from students, families and teachers at D.C. Virgo Urban Preparatory Academy (see photos) to university students and the general public.
CONTRA-TIEMPO uses communal dance forms, such as salsa, afro-cuban, hip-hop and step, as a tool for community-building, empowerment and teaching 21st century skills of communication, collaboration, innovation and creativity. In addition to teaching classes during the day, company members conducted public step and salsa workshops at UNCW, D.C. Virgo and Carolina Lounge (see photos), and made stops at a range of local restaurants and clubs, where they performed, danced and even conducted impromptu workshops.
The residency culminated with two free school performances on Friday, Feb. 22 (see photos) and an evening public performance on Saturday, Feb. 23. Performances featured the East Coast premiere of CONTRA-TIEMPO's newest work Full. Still. Hungry. Sixth grade students from Virgo middle school closed the show with an inspiring and uplifting new work created during the two-week residency. The soundtrack for the new piece featured a poem entitled I Am Home (read poem), the text of which was pulled directly from poems that the students and teachers wrote during a fall residency with poet Glenis Redmond.
