Subject: Budget/Tuition Update

Dear faculty and staff,

The troubled economy has everyone on edge, and in times like these, speculation abounds and rumors seem to fly at warp speed.  Let me dispel some rumors by addressing three key points.

1.      Our budget has been reduced by 6% for the remainder of this fiscal year.  If economic conditions in North Carolina worsen, we may, of course, see additional reductions implemented, but right now, we continue to face a 6% reduction.  I’ve previously communicated the practices we’ve already put in place to handle these cuts (deferring hiring and computer life cycle replacements, eliminating furniture purchases, reductions in travel, non-student temporary wages, overtime, etc.).

  1. For the biennium (2009-2011), we’ve been advised to prepare 3%, 5% or 7% reduction scenarios.  As I outlined in my previous email, this process is underway. To assist in that effort and to answer any questions you may have about the budget reductions or any other issues, I plan to hold two open forums at the Fisher Student Center’s Lumina Theatre on:

February 25:   10-11:30 a.m.  and

February 26:   2:30 – 4:00 p.m.

3.      We are also faced with the related issue of tuition and fee increases.  As you know, we requested of the Board of Governors a tuition increase of 6.5%.  After lengthy discussion, the President and all of the chancellors have agreed that in this economic climate, the entire UNC system needs to respond to the financial problems facing North Carolina families by modifying the campus requests.  Therefore, the President, with the agreement of all chancellors, has decided to recommend to the Board of Governors that we scale back by one-third (33%) all proposed increases for in-state undergraduate tuition.  In addition, the maximum increase proposed in tuition and fees combined for resident undergraduates will be 4.5% rather than 6.5%.  We should know more about new tuition and fees, when the Board of Governors discusses the issue at its February meeting.

I will continue to keep you informed as more information becomes available.  If you have questions or concerns I encourage you to use the budget website VCBA@uncw.edu

Again, thank you for your commitment to UNCW, to our students and to one another.

Sincerely,

Rosemary DePaolo
