As was discussed during the Open Forum on budget issues yesterday, we anticipated that we might experience another 1 percent budget reversion before the end of the 2008-09 fiscal year, for a 7 percent total reversion from this year’s budget.  We finally received official word this morning from the Office of State Budget and Management about the news you probably have already read in today’s paper:  this additional 1 percent budget reduction is being implemented statewide.

The good news for UNCW is that we planned early, and we have successfully set aside enough funds to address this additional 1 percent reversion without further affecting departmental budgets. We will continue to monitor the situation and try to be as prepared for any future reductions as we have been for those that have been implemented this year. I want to commend everyone for the serious consideration you have given our requests to maximize every opportunity for efficiency and effectiveness—I have been amazed by and so proud of the way this campus has come together to address a very difficult situation.

Please remind people, both on and off campus, that this additional 1 percent reduction is from the current year budget and should not be confused with information that you or your friends, colleagues, neighbors and family members are seeing in the media about potential reductions for the biennium budget being developed for 2009-11. At this time, we have no new information about next year’s budget. We have submitted the 3, 5 and 7 percent reduction proposals that were requested and we will not know anything concrete about what level of reductions we are facing until the governor and legislators approve the 2009-10 budget, which will not happen until sometime in the summer.

We continue our efforts to prepare for any reductions we are asked to make for next year’s budget, and I will make sure that you are made aware of any new information as soon as it is possible to communicate it with you.
