Vehicle Registration
Restrictions
A. All undergraduate students living within a one-mile
radius of the center of campus are prohibited from buying or displaying
a daytime (7 a.m. - 4 p.m.) parking permit during the fall and spring
semesters of the academic year. Undergraduates living within the one-mile
radius may purchase a nighttime only permit, valid between 4 p.m. and
7 a.m., Monday through Friday, and on weekends. All students must provide
proof of vehicle liability insurance by providing name of insurance
company and policy number as required by NC General Statutes, G.S.
116-44.4 (d) and G.S. 20-279.1 (11).
B. To register a vehicle, the individual must complete
a vehicle registration form with a current license tag number, make
and model of car, and insurance information.
C. An individual may not register more than one vehicle without
the approval of Parking & Transportation Services. Only one vehicle,
registered to the same person, may be parked on campus at a time. Students
who register two vehicles must provide registration for both cars.
The registrations for both cars must be in the same last name or have
the same address.
D. The individual in whose name the vehicle is registered
is responsible for all parking tickets issued to that vehicle.
Multi-Vehicle / Single-Driver
Registration
When more than one vehicle will be used by an individual faculty,
staff or student for commuting purposes, the following conditions apply:
1. All vehicles must be registered with Parking & Transportation Services.
2. The vehicle registrations for all vehicles must be in the same last
name or have the same address.
3. Only one vehicle, registered to the same person, may be on campus
at any time.
4. A permit will be issued and must be displayed on the vehicle being
parked on campus.
5. Violation of this policy will result in suspension of this privilege
and a citation and fine.
Carpooling
In order to qualify for reduced rates for carpooling, a minimum of
two (2) persons who have registered vehicles on campus must submit
a written statement of intent to carpool to Parking & Transportation
Services. Information submitted must include the carpooler's
names, makes of vehicles, and tag numbers.
If approved, riders will equitably share the full price of the permit,
and each person receives a carpooling sticker which must be displayed
on the left rear window. Only one vehicle of the carpool may be parked
on campus at any one time.
Things you NEED To KNOW
- All parking on campus is by permit only.
All vehicles parked on university property must be registered,
display a valid UNCW parking permit, and park only in areas authorized
by the permit classification.
- UNCW enforces its parking regulations
with ticketing, booting, and towing.
- UNCW has an open parking system, which allows
permit holders to park in any non-reserved, commuter, or
faculty/staff space between 4 p.m. and 7 a.m. Monday – Friday
and on weekends.
- Rules regarding service vehicles, fire lanes, loading zones, 24-hour
reserved, handicap and visitor spaces must be observed at all times.
- Parking regulations and permit enforcement is twenty-four (24)
hours per day – every day (365/366 days per year).
- Lack of convenient parking is not a valid excuse for a violation!
- Parking during prime time (10 a.m. – 2 p.m.) outside your
class is difficult. Leave time to park and walk from perimeter.
- A vehicle is not registered until the decal is permanently affixed
to the vehicle.
- Disabled vehicles must be reported to University Police in person
or by phone.
- If you receive a ticket and have a valid appeal with documentation,
you may appeal within seven calendar days. Written appeals to the
Parking Appeals Committee are filed in Parking & Transportation
Services. ALL DECISIONS OF THE BOARD ARE FINAL.
- Sitting in your car waiting for a parking space is called Queuing
and is a $25 violation.
- Students with parking permits cannot park at parking meters. Students
are permitted to park ONLY in the white spaces within their assigned
commuter or resident zone.
- Commuter students are NOT permitted to park in resident zone areas.
- Resident lots are designated by color (Blue, Teal, Black, Gold,
and Brown). The color of your permit indicates your designated zone.
Resident students must park in assigned resident zones.
- You are expected to walk or bike to Wagoner for meals.
- Parking lots designated as Overflow are open to all residents with
a current permit.
- Resident students may use commuter parking lots only after 4 p.m.
until 7 a.m.!
- Shuttle service is generally within the one-mile radius.
- Motorcycles are to be registered just as any other vehicle that
will take up a parking space on campus. Motorcycles must be registered
and have a parking permit affixed in a manner as to be readily visible.
- Resident permits allow students to park in their designated parking
lot based on their housing assignment. They are not permitted to
park in other resident lots.
- Temporary handicapped parking permits are hung from the rear view
mirror. If you do not have a rear view mirror, the permit should
be placed on the dashboard on the driver’s side.
- Parking permits are needed for evenings to use the Library. For
visitors, metered visitor parking spaces are located in “D
Lot”
between DeLoach and Bear hall near Randall Library.
- If your car is in an accident, you can get a new permit at no extra
charge. You must turn in the old permit from the wrecked car. If
you do not have the old permit, you must present the current registration
for the vehicle or bill of sale for the new car.
- You must have proof of insurance when registering for a parking
permit. It is a state law that any students registering a vehicle
on any North Carolina campus have proof of liability insurance.
