Training Programs

University of North Carolina Wilmington's goal is to create, maintain and enhance a safe and healthy environment for all individuals associated with the institution.

The training programs were established to ensure compliance with all applicable environmental health and safety regulations and to minimize injuries, and therefore, risks.  The individual departments are responsible for defining which positions within their departments require training and to ensure that the employees attend the specified training and observe established procedures.

Preparing for Emergencies

Asbestos Awareness: (OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1101)

This workshop presents basic information about the current state of knowledge concerning the dangers of asbestos fibers in buildings, the methods available to control hazards, and the actions one must take and avoid when working in an area known or presumed to contain asbestos.  It is designed for employees who will not directly handle asbestos material, but who may encounter it in the routine course of their work, such as in Buildings and Grounds employees.  Initial and refresher training is mandatory.

Back Injury Prevention:
American Red Cross course that teaches employees the basics of body mechanics and the prevention of back injuries on and off the job.

Bloodborne Pathogens: (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.130)
This standard is designed to protect health care workers and other affected workers at risk of occupational exposure to blood borne pathogens such as HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C virus.  Cases of occupational transmission are low and preventable.  Occupational exposure means reasonably anticipated skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parental contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials that may result from the performance of an employee's duties.  In addition to healthcare workers, police, housekeeping, plumbers and laboratory personnel could be included.  Annual training required.

Confined Space: (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.146)
Entry into certain types of confined spaces, such as manholes, trenches and pipe chases, may pose significant risk to workers.  An inventory of such spaces has been created and employees who may need to enter these spaces should be trained in the practices and personal protective equipment required.  Training must be provided prior to entry into a confined space and repeated whenever there are changes in the hazards.  Employees should also be aware that hired contractors who work in confined spaces be made aware of associated hazards.

CPR/AED/First Aid
The course is conducted during a 6.5 hour period with the first 4 hours covering CPR/AED and the last 2.5 hours FIrst Aid.  Upon successful completion, participants are certified for Adult CPR/AED for one year and First Aid for three years through American Red Cross.   The cost is $40.00 for the course.

Custom planned and scheduled training to meet the specific needs of departments on campus. Ergonomics:
American Red Cross course that teaches employees the basics of body mechanics and the prevention of musculoskeletal injuries caused by work conditions that have repetitive tasks or awkward positions.

Fire Extinguisher: (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.157)
Training sessions will discuss the various types of extinguishers used on campus along with the advantages and disadvantages of each type.  Proper operation of various extinguishers and the types of fires they are best suited for will be discussed and demonstrated.  Training is available upon request and can be tailored for specific groups.

Forklift: (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178)
Powered industrial trucks to include forklifts, tractors, platform lift trucks, motorized hand trucks, and other specialized industrial trucks powered by electric motors or internal combustion engines may only be used by trained authorized operators.  Training upon employment and on an as needed basis.   Training includes classroom time and a practiced skills evaluation.  A three-year certification is issued.

Formaldehyde:
OSHA required training for anyone who works in a laboratory that utilizes formaldehyde. Covers the OSHA standard including, signage, handling, ventilation, PPE, and disposal.

Hazard Communication (HazCom)
(OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1200)
Employers shall provide employees with effective information and training on hazardous chemicals in their work area at the time of initial assignment and whenever a new physical or health hazard the employees have not been previously trained on is introduced into their work area.  Training will enable employees to obtain the necessary information off of a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).

Hearing Conservation:
OSHA required training for workers that are required to wear hearing protection as part of their job. Includes health effects of exposure to high sound levels and protection strategies. 1 hour, no charge, but required annual audiometric testing.

Lab Safety Training: (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1450)
This program covers policies applicable to all employees (and students) engaged in the laboratory use of hazardous chemicals including Radiation Awareness.  Training topics include descriptions of chemical hazards in the workplace, permissible exposure limits, symptoms of overexposure and methods to detect and reduce hazardous exposure.  Required training is provided to faculty, staff, teaching assistants, and laboratory technicians.  Students are welcome.  Initial and annual refresher trainings.

Laboratory Safety Awareness:
This training addresses basic laboratory safety concepts for those who enter laboratories to perform maintenance, housekeeping and other support functions.  This class describes warning signs, emergency procedures and genral awareness principles

Respiratory Program: (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134)
In certain situations employees may need to wear respiratory protection in order to safely perform their jobs.  No employee may wear an air purifying respirator prior to enrollment in the program.  The program includes training, selection, and fit testing of an appropriate respirator and an annual qualifying medical exam.  Departments who believe that employee jobs involve a special hazard which cannot be controlled through engineering, can contact EH&S.  Annual training, medical exams, and fit testing is required.  Bring your respirator to each session.

Slip/Trip/Fall:
American Red Cross course that teaches employees the causes and prevention steps of slips trips and falls, one of the major causes of workplace accidents.

 Industrial Low-Lift Trucks:

This training is combined with the Forklift Training.  This training is designed to help employees understand the main hazards of industrial  trucks, general safety principles for all kinds of hand trucks, pallet movers and powered hand trucks.  Three year certifications issued.

Rip Current Awareness:

This training is designed to help you learn what a rip current is, how to identify one, how rip currents are forecasted, and what to do if you find yourself caught in one.

Storm Spotter:

This training will teach you how to recognize severe weather such as tornados, thunderstorms, flooding, lightning, hail and microbursts; know what weather phenomena needs to be reported; and how to relay the information to the National Weather Service.

Suspicious Package:

This training will help you know how to identify suspicious packages, understand threats, protect yourself, and understand emergency procedures for suspicious packages on campus.

Preparing for Emergencies:

This training is designed to help faculty and staff recognize, prevent and react to emergencies and make sure that departments have adequate plans in place in the event of an emergency.  Topics will include the full active shooter training, as well as preparations and departmental and university planning for hurricanes, fires, tornados, medical emergencies, gas leaks and more.  The sessions also will include training on the use of the new siren alert system.
