Be the change that YOU want to see in the world.
You Are Not Alone PSA
This Public Service Announcement about sexual assault prevention on the UNCW campus was created by Office of University Relations intern and film studies student Victoria Foley '14, as inspired by the White House's "You Are Not Alone" campaign.
My Stand Mentor Program
The My Stand Mentor program is a great opportunity to receive training and connect with the CARE office as a liaison between your organization and the CARE office in order to build healthy relationships and interpersonal violence prevention skills. The My Stand Mentor program will train you in handling crises, intervening in potentially difficult situations, and assisting in bringing one or more of CARE’s presentations to your organization. By attending My Stand training, we in the CARE office feel that you can deepen your ability to be a more active and engaged resource for your friends and the community. This training is designed to give all students the tools to be the change agents in our culture to reduce violence and improve each other's lives.
Our program consists of two 90-minute training sessions to be certified as a My Stand Mentor. We will be offering both sessions at multiple times throughout each semester (see upper right for sign up info).
We also ask that following completion of the My Stand Mentor training, you will liaison with the CARE staff to bring one of the many available CARE presentations to your group, depending on which presentation feels most beneficial to your organization/group and attend monthly meetings.
Following My Stand training you will receive a pad folio and T-shirt to show the campus that you are a My Stand Mentor. We ask that you wear the T-shirts on Mondays to promote My Stand Mondays on our campus. This is in effort to build support for the idea that being an active and engaged Seahawk is a norm at UNCW.
We will be holding a monthly meeting for all the active My Stand Mentors to attend. Each meeting will have an ongoing training component as well as updates from the CARE staff and from the My Stand Mentors. We hope that once you are trained in My Stand that you will continue to stay connected to our office.
SOAR Bystander Intervetion Model
See a Problem
- Be perceptive
- Recognize red flags
- Trust your gut
- Be confident in your abilities
- Don’t wait for someone else to do something
- Decide what you can do safely & realistically
- Remember the 3 D’s:
- Direct Intervention – Directly say something to the people involved
- Delegate – Get someone else involved (your friends, the friends of the involved parties, people “in charge”, etc.)
- Distract – Be creative and change the course of events (make a scene, get one of one of them out of there, “Hey, Dude”/“Hey, Girl”, etc.)
What's Your Stand Posters
The "What's Your Stand" poster series is a project that highlights active bystanders from across campus. We selected six outstanding students who acted in moments of concern for their fellow Seahawks. This project is ongoing and we are actively seeking stories of Seahawks acting and supporting their peers in pro-social ways.
