The dean of the Watson School of Education is responsible for administering and providing direct and effective leadership in undergraduate and graduate program development, evaluation, staffing, budgeting and resource management to faculty and staff in the departments of curricular studies and specialty studies and the support/field services of the Professional Development System, field experiences, teacher education admissions, outreach programs and service to public schools. Associate and assistant deans, department chairs and select coordinators and directors report directly to the dean.

Responsibilities:

• Participates actively in planning, institutional research and evaluation in support of university-wide programs
• Manages the Watson School of Education
• Launches innovative programs to enhance education community
• Oversees personnel, finances and the budget in the Watson School of Education
• Provides leadership in recruiting and developing a quality faculty dedicated to teaching, service, applied research and creative expression
• Establishes new relationships and maintains current working relationship with the State Department of Public Instruction, state legislature and the UNC Office of the President
• Serves as chief administrative officer responsible for accreditation of programs by NCATE, DPI, etc.
• Supports the institution's commitment to equal educational opportunity and actively assists in meeting the actions set forth in the university's affirmative action plan
• Provides leadership in meeting the professional and staff development needs of school districts throughout the service region
• Serves as a resource person on education issues and trends at the national, regional, and state levels
• Reports directly to the provost/vice chancellor of academic affairs
