The dean of the Graduate School oversees the university's graduate programs and research mission. The dean reports directly to the provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs.

The primary responsibility of dean of the Graduate School is to assure the quality of all graduate programs, including their periodic review, and to lead and assist departments/academic units within the university in developing new programs in response to identified needs. The dean is also expected to:

• Administer the Office of the Graduate School
• Chair monthly meetings of the Graduate Council
• Administer the policies of the Graduate School as determined by the Graduate Council
• Admit students to the degree programs of the Graduate School upon recommendation of the appropriate academic units
• Appoint individuals nominated for membership in the graduate faculty
• Meet with graduate program coordinators on a regular schedule for the purpose of communication and coordination
• Assist in the expansion of professional development opportunities for graduate faculty and graduate students
• Represent graduate education on behalf of academic affairs at all university and UNC system meetings/functions and appropriate graduate educational associations.
