The provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs (VCAA) is responsible for strategic planning and administering the budget for academic affairs, implementing and overseeing all academic programs and overseeing faculty recruitment, promotion and tenure.

Working with the Deans' Council, the provost and VCAA provides academic leadership for the university. The provost and VCAA currently supervises the deans of the college and the schools, as well as the directors of the offices of international programs, library services, research administration, admissions, enrollment services, Center for Teaching Excellence, Technology College and Center for Marine Science.
