| My research and development long-term goals center around the use of technology to improve teaching and learning in science and mathematics with a special emphasis on chemistry. In conjunction with Dr. Jimmy Reeves (Chemistry), and Drs. Gabriel Lugo and Russ Herman (Mathematics and Statistics), we have engaged in projects to develop, implement, and test hypermedia classroom modules as well as technology intensive laboratory units. More recently, we have been joined by Dr. Ron Vetter (Computer Science) in an exciting project to integrate handheld computers and wireless networks into science and mathematics instruction (Project Numina).
Along with Project Numina, our research group is involved in two major projects that have attracted significant funding (>$1.5 M) from the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Education. This work is focused in two areas: (1) the creation of chemistry and mathematics courses that are taught entirely online, including lab (AACE), and (2) the creation of a digital library for science and mathematics learning materials that will utilize the IMS standards for describing these resources (iLumina Project). This latter project also involves Dr. Ron Vetter from Computer Science, Dr. Richard Dillaman from Biological Sciences, and faculty and staff from Virginia Tech, The College of New Jersey, Eduprise, Georgia State University, and Grand Valley State University.
